Guest Bloggers - Meet the maker
Hello everyone! We are the Cardiff University’s students that Hannah has been talking about on the last few posts. We hope you are liking the content we are sharing with you and we would be very happy if you could give us some feedback. After all, we are creating content that we hope can be useful to you.
As part of our ‘what’s your story’ campaign we thought it would be nice to let you know more about the artist behind these lovely flower arrangements and bouquets: Hannah “Strizz” Stracy.
We hope you enjoy knowing more about Hannah and her work as much as we did! So, here we go:
So, Hannah, let’s start by you telling us one interesting or fun fact about yourself?
First off, call me Strizz, everyone else does! An interesting fact? Hmm...I can speak Welsh. Is that interesting?
At what point in life did you think, “yeah I want to be a florist”?
I got interested in it when I was about 17/18 which is almost 10 years ago! I’ve always enjoyed being around nature and plants and I don’t do well behind a desk, I am a maker for sure!
What is the strangest / worst thing that has happened when arranging a bouquet of flowers?
It wasn’t while making a bouquet but I was assisting another florist on a large job and we’d been called in to fix one of the bigger pieces (not made by us) that was attached to a wall in a rather fancy restaurant/hotel..whilst people we’re arriving for drink’s before their meal. As we we’re making changes to it one of the brackets came out of the wall and it essentially wasn’t attached. If we’d let go the whole thing would have fallen off so I had to stand there for what felt like forever (probably only 15/20 minutes or so) holding this piece us while we re-attached it to the wall trying not to make it obvious to the guests who we’re sitting around us. We levelled up in stealth points that day!
Why have you chosen to be a fun / alternative florist instead of going down the more traditional route?
I think it’s because it’s a reflection of who I am as a person. Don’t get me wrong, I love the traditional work but I really feel like I can immerse myself in the weird and wonderful a lot easier because it’s what I know. It’s also very fulfilling using traditional techniques to create something a bit more modern and fun. I’ve made traditional wired bouquets using ornamental pineapples and succulents! I get so excited when I hear people talking about the different things they’d like to do for their wedding flowers or even in bouquets and I love being part of that whole planning process!
How do you find inspiration for your designs?
Instagram is a big one for me. There are so many awesome things being made and captured not just with flowers but through all kinds of art! I like looking at the less obvious trends and communities on social media and using them to think of ideas about the types of things they may or may not like.
If you were to host an event, what theme would you choose and why?
Birds! It’s always all about birds with me! Anything bright and colourful because you can’t be sad surrounded by colour and beauty!
How would you arrange the flowers for the event?
Well, They’d probably be everywhere. I like the idea of a giant hourglass filled with petals or flower heads that could be turned around!
What exciting things are coming up for Pick Me over the next few months?
That would be giving away all the surprises! I can tell you we’ll be at Canada Lodge in Creigiau on the 23rd of April for a wedding fayre but apart from that I’m keeping quiet! (Info on the Canada Lodge wedding fayre can be found here!
And finally, fast forwarding to the future. What is the dream for ‘Pick Me’? Where do you want to be in five years’ time?
In a bigger studio making bigger and better wonderful things with hopefully another dog!
We’d like to thank Strizz for letting us know more about herself and her work. If you have any question for her, please use the comment section and stay tuned for more exciting content coming up soon.
